Seven European centres, including the Instituto de Microcirugía Ocular, are currently working on a project involving the electrical stimulation of the retina, which has already helped restore some vision to patients who were previously blind. The only condition is that the patient needs to have a functioning optic nerve.

Patients who lose their vision have to endure one of the most devastating disabilities. Some diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa, can lead to total darkness for those who suffer from it, and it is, in fact, one of the two leading causes of blindness in adults. But there is hope for these patients: artificial vision has taken its first steps.
