Discover the IMO Foundation's Wetlab

The IMO Foundation has a pioneering Experimental Surgery Laboratory (Wetlab), located at the IMO Grupo Miranza centre in Barcelona. This space is specifically set up next to the operating theatre area, and is equipped with the most advanced instruments and machinery to carry out all types of eye surgery.

The training in the Wetlab complements the theoretical learning of the masters and observers, as it allows them to learn step by step the techniques observed in their mentors and to perfect the handling of the instruments. The aim of these experimental surgeries is to master the technique before facing the first patient.

To carry out the sessions, ex-vivo pig eyes (which are anatomically very similar to human eyes) and the instruments normally used in surgery (such as surgical microscopes and phacoemulsifiers) are used, so that the conditions of a real surgery are faithfully reproduced. During these practical exercises, the students are also assisted by an instructor, who guides and advises them during the exercises.

Access to the IMO Foundation's Wetlab is exclusively for students of the ophthalmology specialisation masters and observers doing an external rotation at IMO Grupo Miranza Barcelona.
