A fun trip around the eye with the IMO

The IMO will be appearing for the first time at Barcelona’s Children’s Festival to be held from 27 December to 4 January.

IMO will be appearing for the first time at Barcelona’s Children’s Festival, between 27 December and 4 January, with the aim of teaching children about the eye and helping them discover how vision works.

On its stand, IMO will be displaying models of the main parts of the eye (cornea, pupil, lens, retina and optic nerve) and will be inviting children to explore them and trace the journey that light takes from outside the eye to the brain, where images are formed.

As well as the fun part of finding out about the eye, children will also be given a free visual acuity test, a basic examination to check for common visual problems associated with childhood, such as amblyopia and strabismus.

This initiative is part of a children’s eye care programme that also includes training sessions for nurses from various hospitals and health centres in Catalonia and talks aimed at parents. Eye check-ups for children are essential for the prevention and early diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, because it is in the early years of life that visual ability develops. In many cases, if childhood eye problems are not treated, it is very difficult or sometimes impossible to restore lost vision in adulthood.

As well as its appearance at Barcelona’s Children’s Festival, in January, IMO will be organising a talk for parents on children’s eye health (Wednesday, 25 January at 7:00 pm) and offering free eye tests for children under the age of 10 (23 – 28 January), coordinated by its Early Diagnosis Unit, at its premises.
