Letters for Science
On the occasion of World Book Day (April 23), the IMO Foundation launches the third edition of “Letras por la Ciencia” ("Letters for Science") with the aim of uniting the world of letters with the world of science to fight blindness.
The IMO Foundation has been researching for more than 10 years the genetic origin and possible treatment of retinal dystrophies, a series of rare diseases that cause different types of blindness and low vision. Thanks to the altruistic collaboration of companies and individuals, the funds raised in previous editions of “Letras por la Ciencia” have made it possible to continue our research.
From our Molecular Biology Laboratory we carry out four basic research projects, focused on identifying the genetic origin of retinal dystrophies and studying their possible treatment. Despite the challenges posed by 2020, during the past year we managed to identify a new mutation not described to date in the ARSG gene, which confirms the existence of a 4th type of Usher Syndrome. We also initiated the analysis of DNA samples from 15 families with Stickler Syndrome to identify the molecular causes of this pathology, and we continue to work with a cohort of more than 80 families to analyze in depth the ABCA4 gene, related to a large number of retinal dystrophies. In parallel, we have worked with different stem cell models (iPSC) to correct their genetic mutations using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, and to be able to apply this methodology in future gene and cell therapies.
All these achievements are possible thanks to the support of people like you, who help us to continue advancing day after day and year after year. On this remarkable day for the world of literature, we encourage you to donate your book to the cause so that we can continue our research.
